Don't let go of the tripod

Don't let go of the tripod, originally uploaded by PMMPhoto.

"The light was very flat and poor but I decided to stay around and just experiment with shutter speed and standing in way of the breaking waves.

I'd already managed to break a leg off my tripod before this point and only managed to "fix" it by jamming one of the leg sections back in so that I could use it (waist height only now, it won't budge). I normally bring a spare tripod but not this day.

After a soaking some weeks before I was head to toe waterproofed and thought catching the waves as they hit me might be an interesting thing to capture. I would have liked the camera to be lower but that's no longer possible with this tripod :o(

The follow through of this wave hit me and the camera about waist hieght. I was shooting on continuous bursts repeating to myself "do not let go of the tripod, do not let go of the tripod...."

Turns out the camera is very water resistant. On more than a dozen occaisions the camera was probably under the water for 5 secs or more. But don't sue me if your camera ceases to function when under water though.

Newhaven Harbour

Newhaven Harbour, originally uploaded by NorthernXposure.

"Another from my recent visits to Newhaven Harbour - mainly because I haven't taken anything new in the last few weeks. Maybe now the clocks have changed we can look forward to longer evenings and some nice sunsets.

The orange glow to the lighthouse light is real BTW - the colours rotate through a whole spectrum about every 30 secs.

The Tree

The Tree, originally uploaded by Sir Clicksalot.

"Tonemapped from a single RAW file.
Cropped.
Aggressive noise reduction including some smudging.
Mild cloning to reduce the plane trails
Adjusted the levels in the grass area then some dodging and burning to blend in with the light in the rest of the picture.
Sharpened.
Framed.
Pretentious title.
A nod to the ego.
Turd polished."

Skiing above the Emerald Loch - Cairngorms.

"What with one thing and another I've been uber busy with work and play lately but have managed to get out with the camera here and there.

I've been holding back, waiting for this to make print, and it's now in Fall Line magazine. It's a shot of Gavin MacKay dropping into the Emerald Loch tree run near Glenmore in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park not far from Aviemore. The mountain skied is Creag nan Gall and loch is An Lochan Uaine. This is away from the normal ski areas and involves skinning up the hill with ski mountaineering kit before unleashing all on the way back down. If you're interested there's a full article and video of the day's antics here.

The skiing's so good here that we have just come back from the Alps early to be back in Scotland."

John Byrne

John Byrne, originally uploaded by Alex Boyd.

"John Byrne is an artist and playwright whose work I've enjoyed since studying his well known Slab Boys Trilogy (in four parts) at school many years ago, and his illustrations adorn several of my Beatles and Donovan records.

Yesterday as I was coming back from the Scottish Parliament John got on the same train, and I spoke to him for a short while about his work, and he kindly enquired about my own. He was incredibly friendly, and I appreciated him taking the time to chat to a complete stranger in such a warm and accommodating way.

I've never really taken any street photography before (I'm quite a shy person) but I decided to get over my fears and take this shot of him at Queen Street Station in Glasgow. Other than a quick crop, it is pretty much straight from the camera and I'm quite happy with it - I might have to try more in the future."
